Legislation bans e-cigarettes on school grounds

Gov. Cuomo will sign an executive order mandating that every state agency provide voter registration forms to those they deal with and to offer help in filling them out

Legislation bans e-cigarettes on school grounds

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is making voter registration forms more easily accessible.

According to the state Board of Elections, 16 different state agencies already make voter registration forms available.

NY has a low rate of student voter registration compared to public colleges in other states.

Read the executive order.

In addition, Cuomo is directing the city and state university systems to investigate their own campus voter registration efforts in an effort to boost student voter registration numbers.

Cuomo hopes that expanding voter registration will help combat low voter participation across the state. The task force will be run by two of Cuomo's top aides.

The order comes after President Trump's controversial Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, created to investigate possible voter fraud, requested voter information from all 50 states.

"Nicotine use in any form has shown to be damaging to teens, and this measure will close a unsafe loophole that allows e-cigarettes to be used in NY schools", Cuomo said in a statement.

Cuomo has publicly opposed the commission and stated that he believes that the federal government is going to ultimately attempt to restrict voter access.

"It is our responsibility to make it as easy as possible for people to vote because that's what democracy looks like", Cuomo said.

"Whether you are a student in college or a grandparent living on social security, there should be no artificial barriers to register and take part in the electoral process", Cuomo said Monday.

NY has one of the lower turnout rates in the nation.

The order comes as NY is refusing to comply with the Trump administration's request to hand over voter data as part of an alleged voter fraud investigation. Federal law has also mandated these institutions provide students an opportunity to register to vote, as well as assistance and filing of registration forms through campus Disabled Student Service offices. The state now allows voters to cast an absentee ballot early, if they can show proof that they will not be able to vote on Election Day.

Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo proposed "The Democracy Project", a comprehensive package of legislation to further modernize and reform New York's voting system.
