The National Highway Authority (NHA) is also among the authorities implementing the regulations as it checks the safety standards in oil tankers transporting flammable commodity from Karachi's ports to the upcountry.
The Senate's Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources was informed on Monday that Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had deployed third party inspectors to check the shape of oil tankers aimed at avoiding untoward incidents.
Chairman Mir Israrullah Khan Zehri said 230 people had lost their lives in the Ahmedpur Sharqia oil tanker tragedy and the authority should take stringent measures to avoid the occurrence of such incidents in future. "It should be the responsibility of either the motorway police, or the oil companies which are filling these tankers", he said. "We are following the laws of OGRA for the past 10 years", they added.
