The Paris Olympics 2024 program will be finalised after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so the committee will have years to consider the question and take note of the reception to these showcase competitions. Fans of video games can rejoice: the question will be finally considered by the worldwide olympic Committee. "It's not about Olympics, '" Tony Estanguet, co-president of the bid board, told the AP.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach addressed the matter saying "We are not yet 100 percent clear whether eSports is really a sport with regard to physical activity and what it needs to be considered a sport".
Back in April The Olympic Council of Asia already announced that it would be adding 4 eSports events to the 2022 Asian Games, Dota 2, StarCraft II, Hearthstone and a yet to be revealed sports game (possibly Federation Internationale de Football Association or NBA). Estanguet told the Associated Press that talks have been scheduled with the International Olympic Committee and with esports representatives "to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success".
"I don't want to say "no" from the beginning", Estanguet said. The OCA will have to figure out a deal first with Blizzard, Riot, and Valve as well as well as other developers who would be interested in having their game featured in the 2022 Asian games.Читайте также: Liverpool Issue Statement On Philippe Coutinho
Introducing eSports would nearly certainly help make the Olympics more relevant to younger generations-a tick in Estanguet's pro column.
eSports might not be considered as a real sport yet, but one can't deny the amount of revenue it generates from all its tournaments, not to mention the massive fan-base it has already built.
