Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov delighted his home fans when he battled from a set down to record a stunning upset victory over top seed Rafael Nadal in the third round of the Rogers Cup on Thursday, temporarily spoiling the Spaniard's chances of returning to world number one.

Haase will face the victor between second-seeded Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals on Saturday.

In the quarters, Shapovalov defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino to reach advance to the semi-finals where he will take on Alexander Zverev tomorrow (as per IST).

Haase, who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the third round, reached his first career Masters Series semifinal.

The 30-year-old Haase, ranked 52nd in the world, improved to 5-0 against 36th-ranked Schwartzman in his career.

Shapovalov was born in Tel Aviv to parents who had immigrated from the former Soviet Union.

Shapovalov's mother, Tessa, is a Russian Catholic, according to the Times of Israel.

Rafael Nadal fell to a shock defeat by 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. He quickly got on a roll in Montreal beating Brazil's Rogerio Dutra Silva in the opening round 4-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4.

In other tournament action, American Jared Donaldson lost to Diego Schwartzman 0-6 7-5 7-5, while his countryman Sam Querrey was thrashed 6-4 6-1 by Kevin Anderson of South Africa. After he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round, he pulled off the upset of the tournament by defeating Rafael Nadal in the third round to reach his first masters quarter-final.

Shapovalov had just three wins this season coming into the tournament.

"He played well", Nadal said.
