At least nine fighters killed in separate attacks in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq, government officials say.

Turkish police have detained 23 people, including the Antalya co-chairs of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), in operations against Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in five provinces, CNN Türk reported on Friday.

In an attack in the eastern province of Tunceli late Friday, a soldier was martyred and two wounded during a counter-terrorism operation, the provincial governor's office said in a statement.

The slain fighters were suspected of being behind the assassination attempt on Mehmet Kocabey, Baykan district head, on July 7 and the death of a gendarmerie station commander on July 24.

Later, in a news conference, Siirt Governor Ali Fuat Atik said that one of the terrorists killed was a former Siirt Municipality employee, who was later laid off by a government-appointed trustee.

In a statement, the gendarmerie said: "A total of 211 suspects were detained during 146 operations carried out by security forces across the city and rural areas; 57 of suspects were remanded in custody by the local court,".
