The Frenchman's thunderous header completed a thrilling comeback for Arsenal on the opening day of the season, and the idea that any suitors might lure Giroud away was met by "a determined no" from Wenger.

But Shinji Okazaki's equaliser 160 seconds after Lacazette's first for his new club highlighted a defensive deficiency which has dogged Arsenal for too long.

This is not about lack of preparation, however.

Arsenal supporters and the on-looking injured Alexis Sanchez must have felt they'd seen it all before, as poor marking, positioning and organisation presented the visitors with three clear-cut chances they gladly seized. They certainly started the right way, beating Chelsea for the Community Shield.

Reports on Wednesday suggested the big-spending Ligue 1 giants were preparing a fresh £80million offer for the Chile star, despite only signing Neymar in a world-record deal earlier this month. I got back late, I should have handled this better.

Arsene Wenger believes his side suffered last season from the uncertainty surrounding his future.

"Some you know about and that's very hard for a group of players to cope with that - and some other reasons we will talk about on another day".

However, Wenger insists that Giroud will remain in north London beyond the end of the transfer window despite being given the opportunity to move on and seek more regular football elsewhere.

So while the overall situation is not ideal, the Gunners are hardly down to bare bones.

A lot has changed since these two sides last met in April when Arsenal snatched a late slim 1-0 win gifted the Gunners courtesy of an own goal by Robert Huth. Even that match proved to be a fraught encounter, however, as many were quick to label Ramsey offside when he netted the victor in injury time.

Tottenham - It looks like a mistake that it hasn't strengthened its squad, though perhaps it still will before the season kicks off. Spurs had a terrific campaign last season and had it been any other season they would have won it.

Arsenal's victory in this game was more about erasing mistakes than keeping the upper hand. Their margin for error is smaller than ever before.

If you thought the pressure might have eased on Wenger over the summer, think again.

Arsenal beat Leicester at home, something that doesn't always happen to the Gunners, often starting the season with jitters and losses.

Chelsea Lining Up £25m Move For Premier League Player
Conte said he did not want to answer questions about Costa, but tellingly conceded: "For me it's in the past". The jeers were likely directed at the match officials, with Chelsea having a player sent off in both halves.
