Merkel says she sees no military solution to North Korea

President Donald Trump says North Korea's leader will "regret it fast" if he threatens or acts against Guam, or any other USA territory or ally.

Trump says he has yet to speak with the governor of the territory, but says, "I feel that they will be very safe, believe me".

China's President Xi Jinping said there needs to be a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue, and in a telephone call with US President Donald Trump he urged all sides to avoid words or action that raise tensions.

The statement Friday does not mention any specific actions China would be willing to take, although some Chinese scholars and state media have called on Beijing to take on a shuttle diplomacy role to facilitate talks between the US and North Korea.

Trump said he was considering additional sanctions on North Korea, adding these would be "very strong". KCNA said on Thursday the North Korean army would complete plans in mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land in the sea 18 to 25 miles (30-40 km) from Guam.

Trump says tens of millions of Americans support his tough position on North Korea's nuclear threat.

North Korea this week announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory, which is a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers.

A new approach for North Korea's nuclear weapon threat
Trump expressed hope that the US would not have to use this "power", but remained confident in the strength of the country. The United States and North Korea have repeatedly exchanged hard-line rhetoric, as if to show no hesitation to go to war.

Cicilline said Trump's bellicose language against North Korea has raised alarms around the world, adding that "if the president will not defuse this situation, then Congress must".

The deployment is largely aimed at responding to the risk of falling fragments while missiles fly over the region.

On Saturday, Merkel kicked off her re-election campaign with a stinging attack on German auto executives, pressing them to innovate to secure jobs, and win back trust lost by a diesel emissions scandal.

Sergey Lavrov said Friday that Russian Federation is strongly anxious about escalating rhetoric coming from Pyongyang and Washington.

Russia's foreign minister says the risk of a military conflict between the US and North Korea is "very high".

Asked how Moscow would act in case of a military conflict between the US and the North, Lavrov answered it would do everything it could to prevent the worst-case scenario. Pyongyang tested a missile last month which it said could reach America, and U.S. officials have claimed Kim Jong-un has developed a nuclear warhead small enough to be loaded inside such an intercontinental weapon. The United States, which is technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with only a truce, wants to stop Pyongyang from developing nuclear missiles that could hit the United States.

There are no air raid drills or cars in camouflage netting as was the case during previous crises.

Malaysia: Violence erupts at political forum led by former PM Mahathir
Experts blame racial rhetoric that has escalated in recent months following Mahathir's move to join the opposition. In fact, Tun Mahathir has set aside his past with Anwar.

North Koreans have lived for decades with the state media message that war is imminent, the U.S.is to blame and their country is ready to defend itself.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there is no military solution to the dispute, adding that "an escalation of the rhetoric is the wrong answer".

"I don't see a military solution to this conflict", she said. Last week, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on Pyongyang.

Guam, the Pacific island that is a United States territory and home to a USA air base, a Navy installation, a Coast Guard group and around 6,000 U.S. military personnel, posted emergency guidelines yesterday to help residents prepare for any potential nuclear attack. "It's never been a vehicle for negotiations and this doesn't constitute substantive U.S. -DPRK dialogue", he said, using the acronym for North Korea's formal name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. If carried out, it would be its most provocative missile launch to date. She says Germany would work to find diplomatic solutions with the countries involved, the USA and China in particular, but also South Korea. But Daniel Russel, the former top US diplomat for East Asia until April, said this so-called NY channel had been a relatively commonplace means of communication with North Korea over the years, and it was not a forum for negotiation.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has called a meeting of European Union member states next week to discuss what action they will take regarding North Korea.
