In surprisingly hostile United Nations speech, Trump comes out swinging against Iran

US President Donald Trump in his first UNGA speech criticised "rogue regimes which support terrorists and threaten other countries".

Trump said in the speech that if North Korea didn't back down from its nuclear aggression, the USA would "have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea".

Trump and North Korean President Kim Jong Un have been trash-talking for some time now about North Korea's aggressive pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. "The United States is ready, willing, and able".

At the special meeting on reform held at the UN headquarters in New York, Trump asked the 193-nation organisation to "focus more on people, less on bureaucracy". Warming the hearts of his core voters, Trump railed against North Korea giving the regime his harshest warning yet.

President Trump used his first address at the United Nations to further escalate his standoff with North Korea over its nuclear challenge.

"That deal is embarrassment to the U.S. and I don't think you've heard the last of it, believe me".

Shifrinseon says the US has long sought an end to North Korean nuclear testing, but that the president's threats are what's new.

"In America, we do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to watch", Mr Trump said.

In a speech that was at times less bombastic than the businessman's freewheeling campaign style, the President was heard to mispronounce the name of the organisation he was addressing, referring to the "Unaided Nations".

"Time and time again, President Trump has threatened to curtail the United States' obligations to the global human rights system and to the United Nations itself, " said Jessica Stern, executive director of OutRight Action worldwide.

Over the past week, Trump has signalled his frustrations with the Iranian nuclear deal that former President Barack Obama made. But his 42-minute speech, delivered in a combative tone rare for an American leader, put them in stark relief at a time of widespread anxiety among USA allies and partners over the nation's traditional role of world leader.

Bolton also spoke about the state of the United Nations and said Trump needs to keep his straightforward approach when it comes to critiquing the organization that boasts 193 member countries.

"The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions", he said.

He told the leaders of some Latin American countries that the situation in Venezuela was "totally unacceptable", calling it a socialist dictatorship.
