The two companies announced Wednesday that they will work with Japan-based Toho Co., Ltd., the producers of the original animated film, to develop a live-action take on the story.

Abrams will produce via his Bad Robot banner along with the banner's Lindsey Weber.

THR reports that JJ Abrams is developing the remake for Bad Robot and Paramount, with Eric Heisserer, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Arrival, on board for the first script draft.
