HP back on top of global PC sales

Global PC sales reached 67.2 million units in the third quarter of this year marking a 0.5 percent decrease over the same period last year

PC shipments down for 12th consecutive quarter

Latest Gartner estimates shows that the Global PC shipments have now fell 3.6 percent to 67 million units in the 3rd Quarter of 2017. The company had sold 4.6 million units during the quarter which is a decline from 4.8 million units in the same period in 2016, a overall market share decline to 6.9 percent from earlier 7.0 percent.

Research firm Gartner said this was the 12th consecutive quarter when shipments had trended downwards.

While HP Inc and Lenovo shipped nearly the same number of units during the quarter. HP was in an upward trend as this was its fifth consecutive quarter of growth.

"While there were signs of stabilisation in the PC industry in key regions, including EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), Japan and Latin America, the relatively stable results were offset by the U.S. market, which saw a 10 percent (year-over-year) decline", said Mika Kitagawa, Principal Analyst at Gartner.

"Business PC demand, led by Windows 10 upgrades, continued to drive PC shipments across all regions, but its refresh schedule varies by region", she said.

The data includes all types of PC (including desktop models), but does not include Chromebook computers or iPad devices.

North Korea's nuclear tests and missile launches have stirred global tensions and prompted several rounds of worldwide sanctions at the UN Security Council.

"The component price hike impacted the consumer PC market as most vendors generally pass the price hike on to consumers, rather than absorbing the cost themselves", Kitagawa said.

Dell's worldwide PC shipments were slightly down compared with a year ago, as it registered its first year-over-year shipment decline since the first quarter of 2016. We might not see a great fourth quarter and but can expect a small volume decline by the end of the year.

Consumer demand was lacklustre but PC demand among businesses remained steady, especially notebooks.

Energy Information Administration due later Thursday to show a decline in crude stockpiles for the week ended October 6. USA commercial crude oil inventories decreased by 2.8 million barrels from the previous week, the EIA said.

"The traditional PC market performed much as expected in the third quarter", said Loren Loverde, program vice president for worldwide PCD trackers, in a prepared statement.
