There's been a lot of talk but 5G is finally real with Qualcomm managing the first successful trial of a 5G connection. In this case, Qualcomm achieved the feat in its San Diego laboratory. The firm has delivered higher than gigabit speeds using the X50 modem, announced a year ago, over a 28Ghz mmWave frequency. Other pieces to the 5G puzzle included an SDR051 mmWave RF transceiver IC, Keysight Technologies 5G Protocol R&D Toolset and UXM 5G wireless test platform.

In the Qualcomm-sponsored report published by David Teece, professor, University of California at Berkeley, and market researcher IHS Markit, it has come to light that 5G mobile technology has the potential to create 22 million jobs and will have a telling effect on broad range of industries - from retail to education, transportation to entertainment, and everything in between - could produce up to $12.3 trillion worth of goods and services. It supports MIMO with adaptive beam-forming and beam-tracking technology, has 800MHz bandwidth support, and is spec'd for maximum download speeds of 5Gbps once 5G networks are fully oprerational.
