Fernandez is accused of trying to cover up Iranian officials' involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center, known as AMIA, in Buenos Aires in exchange for favorable trade deals.

An Argentine judge called on Congress to remove former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's immunity as a senator so she can be arrested after bringing charges of treason, aggravated concealment and obstruction against her.

Former Chancellor Hector Timerman was placed under house arrest on Thursday, along with former presidential secretary Carlos Zannini, and two others, newspaper La Nacion reported.

Nisman alleged that a 2013 agreement between Argentina and Iran to jointly investigate the bombing was meant to cover up the suspects of the attack, including former Iranian President Ali Akbar Rafsanjani and former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayatí, in order to promote bilateral trade.

In November an investigation by the country's border police agency concluded that Alberto Nisman, who led the probe into the Buenos Aires terror attack, was murdered just four days after he formally accused then-president Kirchner of covering up the role of former Iranian officials in the attack. Nisman, 51, was found dead on January 18, 2015, with a bullet in his right temple.

The bombing targeted a Buenos Aires Jewish center and killed 85 people.

Kirchner is facing trial in several other cases involving alleged corruption and money-laundering during her term as president.

The rejected appeal also applies to her children Maximo, 40, and Florencia, 27, according to the Center for Judicial Information.

The Senate will now have to vote on lifting her immunity at the judge's request, for which a two-thirds majority is needed.
