Carey's grandfather John Demkiw, 93, passed away on Saturday in Winnipeg.
It not only brought Team Carey to 5-0, but it came on the same day that Carey's granddad was laid to rest.
OTTAWA-Having a potential game-winning shot against the Olympic champion is challenging enough for a young skip.
"He was one of my biggest fans for sure", Carey said. I'm sad I couldn't be at his funeral, I'm sad I can't be with my mom.
"He would have wanted me to be here and he would have wanted me to pour all my energy and heart and soul into that game and that's what I did".
Carey, meanwhile, moved into sole possession of first place in the women's standings at 5-0. Two of her wins have come against the tournament favourites Jones and Rachel Homan, which will work in her favour in a tie-breaking scenario.
The Vernon rink is 1-and-3 in the nine team round robin. Homan was on the ice against Casey Scheidegger on Wednesday night, looking to join Jones at 5-1. Calgary's Chelsea Carey (4-0) also remained unbeaten after a 9-3 rout of Toronto's Allison Flaxey in the morning draw.
Lindsey Vonn Has Already Turned Down Her Future White House Invitation

"I don't know that it was necessarily as well played a game as either team would have liked, but we'll take it", Carey said.
"Those teams that you think are going to be there at the end of the week are the ones you most want to beat". Carey, who doubles as a sales rep at The Brick, said they would enjoy this win "for about five minutes, and then we'll get right back to business".
Overton-Clapham, who certainly wasn't happy about the move, said it's all in the past now.
"A wise friend said, 'You don't have to win five games, you just have to win one game five times,"' Sweeting said. She returns to the ice Thursday afternoon when she will face Thunder Bay's Krista McCarville (2-2). "That'll have to be better if we're going to make the playoffs".
"I think we're made of something a little bit more than just crumbling after one loss", Jones said. "It's hard to go through this thing undefeated but obviously we don't like to lose that way. It was not our best effort".
"Our goal was six wins and we got there a little quicker than we would have anticipated", Koe's third, Marc Kennedy, said.
"We play these same teams every week".

"But we've all been here before".
Winnipeg's Mike McEwen beat Saskatoon's Steve Laycock 10-4 in the early men's game.
Teams with three losses are still alive on both sides of the draw, but can't afford any more slip-ups. While Jones stole two in the ninth to reduce her deficit to two, Carey's Calgary rink held on for the win.
In other action on the afternoon draw, 2017 Manitoba women's champion Michelle Englot finally notched her first win of this event, dumping Woodstock's Julie Tippin 9-6 to improve to 1-4.
"I would say that there was a lot of really well-thrown rocks by our team and a huge lack of results", he said.
"I'm not anxious about end results, I'm not anxious about record".
