David Ermold returned to the Rowan County courthouse Wednesday, almost two years after Clerk Kim Davis refused to give him a marriage license because he was gay.
In 2015, Davis denied a marriage license to Ermold and his partner, David Moore, although a U.S. Supreme Court decision upheld the right for same-sex couples to marry.
"I am running to restore the people's confidence in our clerk's office and because I believe that the leaders of our community should put the needs of their constituents first and should be an example of integrity and fairness", Ermold's campaign website says.
"This is how gay people are treated in this country, this is what it's like, this is their experience, this is how it feels", Ermold said. Davis later became a darling of the Christian right after she refused to follow a court order to issue licenses and went to jail on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015.

Ermold filed his paperwork to run at the county clerk's office where Davis now works. Davis said she would refuse to allow any of her employees to issue the licenses, as well, though the standoff was eventually resolved when one of her deputies, Brian Mason, began to do so anyway. The two are now married, and Ernold filed to run against Davis on Wednesday.
According to the Lexington Herald Leader, Ermold will join a crowded field.
Less than a month after she was released from jail, Davis, who won election to the office in 2014 as a Democrat, switched her affiliation to the Republican Party.
Davis's mother was the previous clerk, and Davis's son works in the clerk's office, as well.

The county clerk's office has been in the hands of the same family for nearly 35 years... "I think there's the potential they want to keep it in the family". In 2016, the Kentucky General Assembly established an alternate license. But everyone should have a fair shot, it should not be something that's handed down from mother to daughter and from daughter to son. The MIT researchers have stated that with further development, it may be possible to have the cells communicate with each other. The receiving bacteria only lit up when they overlapped and receive "input" from the signalling bacteria in the lower layer.
