Bredesen served as governor of Tennessee in 2003 through 2011.
Bredesen is the last Democrat to win a statewide election in Tennessee, a state that famously turned its back on favorite son Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election in favor of Republican George W. Bush. Before his two terms in the state house, he was Nashville mayor from 1991 to 1999.
A former Nashville mayor and self-made millionaire, Bredesen cited a lack of "quality" jobs and a need to fix the Affordable Care Act well as address the nation's soaring deficit, spending by Congress and the opioid "crisis".
