The museum tweeted that "Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi is coming to #LouvreAbuDhabi", which was confirmed by Christie's, the auction house that handled the sale of the painting. The painting "Savior of the world" the crowned representative of the Arab countries bought at auction in the United States for $ 450 million.

According to the New York Times, the painting's buyer was not the museum but an outside party: one Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud, a "little-known" Saudi Arabian prince with no history as an art collector.

The 500-year-old painting is called "Salvator Mundi", Latin for "Savior of the World". The crown prince of Saudi Arabia and his counterpart in Abu Dhabi enjoy a close working relationship and on 5 December their countries announced the formation of a Joint Cooperation Committee to formalise existing collaboration on military, political, economic and cultural matters.

Hubbard's medal is the first won by any New Zealander in the World Championships, a competition that began in 1891. Duangaksorn lifted 115kg in her second snatch attempt but failed to hoist 119kg in her third to finish fifth.

The French weekly le Journal du Dimanche earlier reported that two investment firms were behind the painting's purchase as part of a financial arrangement involving several museums.

The sale more than doubled the previous record of $179.4m paid for Pablo Picasso's The Women of Algiers (Version O) in 2015, also in NY.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi - a franchise of the Paris original - is a symbol of the oil-rich sheikhdom's drive to boost its "soft power" credentials.

Under a 30-year agreement, France provides expertise, lends works of art and organises exhibitions in return for one billion euros ($1.16bn). It now displays "La Belle Ferronnière", which is on loan from the Louvre in Paris, according to Bloomberg.

Dating from the 1500s, the painting was billed as the final Leonardo work held in private hands, one of roughly 20 paintings attributed to him.

The result obliterated previous world records for an art sale of any kind, including the auction high of $179.4 million for a Pablo Picasso painting sold in 2015. The painting was sold again in 1958 and then acquired in 2005 by a group of art dealers for less than $10,000. The seller was Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, who purchased it for $127.5 million in 2013.
