The withdrawal of Ugandan troops has begun in Somalia, Garowe Online reported.
The Ugandan military made the announcement yesterday regarding their officials who are operating as part of a United Nations plan to reduce the number of African Union troops.
Uganda was the first country to deploy troops to Somalia in 2007 to back a weak federal government in Mogadishu against an insurgency by the extremist group al-Shabab, which is responsible for many deadly attacks in Somalia and elsewhere in the region. Richard Karemire told Xinhua that phased withdrawal is in compliance with the African Union- and United Nations-approved reduction of 1,000 uniformed personnel serving under African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) by the December 31 deadline.
