Alabama joins Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia

This Bama student celebrated making the College Football Playoff by…bragging about getting rejected from Ohio State?

College Football Playoff: East Coast bias least favors OU

With bowl games beginning as early as December 16, fans are primarily looking forward to January 1, which kicks off the semifinal round of the College Football Playoffs. The school of the Heisman victor has won eight of its past 10 bowls (the 2014 and 2015 winners each played two bowl games as their teams won in the national semifinals).

The rest of the New Year's Six bowls fell this way: USC (11-2) vs. Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29; Washington (10-2) vs. Penn State (10-2) in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 30; Miami (11-1) vs. Wisconsin (12-1) in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30; and UCF (12-0) vs. The Crimson Tide beat out Big Ten champion Ohio State for the final spot despite not winning its SEC division.

The College Football Playoff's four-team field should expand to six or eight teams.

After top-ranked Clemson University and second-ranked University of Oklahoma cruised to victories in their games to win the ACC and Big 12 Championships, respectively, the fourth playoff spot was left unclear.

OK, not so much with the top three teams (Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia), but the highly debated fourth spot.

Marvin Lewis: John Ross concealed shoulder injury from the Bengals
A top-10 pick out of Washington, Ross ends the 2017 season as one of the more disappointing selections in the entire draft. Ross was thought to be a healthy scratch in certain situations this season, so this revelation makes more sense.

Why should teams care about the conference championship if it may not affect the playoff selection?

We probably should have seen it coming that Alabama was going to be one of the four teams.

"We'll go forward building and attacking, using our meeting time, training time, practice time and this next bowl game to motivate us and improve as a football team". Of course, it wouldn't eliminate the bundle of meaningless bowl games, but at least it would add a few more relevant games.

In 2015, the inaugural playoff semifinals matching Oregon-Florida State and Ohio State-Alabama each drew better than 28 million viewers on ESPN, according to the Nielsen company. The FCS uses a 24-team playoff bracket to determine its champion.

"In this case the margins weren't close enough to look at those other matters", Hocutt said. Auburn had 488 yards of offense in a regular-season rout of Georgia, but was held to just 259 total yards in losing to the Tigers in the SEC Championship last Saturday.

And if we're talking about losses, wouldn't you take a seven-point loss against a two-loss team versus a 12-point loss to a three-loss team? That starts now. It really started last week.

Outside of the light-up-the-scoreboard, bombs-away brand of football played in the Big 12, the conference doesn't command a whole lot of respect in terms of line-'em-up, hit-you-in-the-mouth, play-tough-nosed- defense football. It could simply include the top eight teams and seed them accordingly, which not many people would complain about.

"We should just ask them at the beginning of the season: Go ahead and vote on it, figure out 1, 2, 3 and 4 and let's just not (bother)".

But, Lewis said, "I still think the numbers are going to be well short of the first year of the playoff".

Based on everything, it seems Alabama is only in the College Football Playoff for no other reason than the committee wanted them in and ranked teams to justify the pick. Riley is in his first year as head coach with the Sooners and Smart in his second year with Georgia. Ohio State did so past year. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET on ESPN.
