Trump signs US military defense bill worth nearly $700 bn 0

President Donald Trump signed into law Tuesday the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, a $700 billion defense budget that seeks to increase military spending and operational capabilities.

The act calls for $626 billion for the department's base budget and another $66 billion for operations.

"This historic legislation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to our men and women in uniform - the greatest fighting force in the history of the world - and we're making it a lot better than even that", Trump said before signing the bill.

The bill includes measures like the establishment of a U.S. Space Corps within the Air Force by 2019, a 2.4 percent pay raise for troops, special pay for situations like combat and hazardous duty and bonuses for re-enlistment contracts.

"Now Congress must finish the job by eliminating the defense sequester and passing a clean appropriations bill".

"With the signing of this defense bill, we accelerate the process of fully restoring America's military might", Trump said at a White House signing ceremony, where he was flanked by Pentagon top brass including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

"This legislation will enhance our readiness, expand and modernize our forces and help provide our service members with the tools they need to fight and win". But hopefully, with this, we won't have to fight because people will not be wanting to fight with us.

The budget would give legislative authority to implement his South Asia strategy and authorises critical missile capabilities to confront threats posed by North Korea. As you know, we've won in Syria, we've won in Iraq. "But they spread to other areas and we're getting them as fast as they spread".

"Finally, the defense bill authorizes major investments in our military's greatest weapon of all: its warriors", he said. A deadline for Congress to pass a federal budget and appropriations bills is looming as the current budgetary continuing resolution is set to expire on December 22. "Together, we will send a clear message to our allies and a firm warning to our enemies and adversaries: America is strong, proud, determined, and ready".
