Sea lion attacks San Francisco woman out for a morning swim

A woman has become the third person to be attacked by sea lions at Aquatic Park Cove a popular spot for swimming near Fisherman’s Wharf

In the fourth attack of its kind within a month at San Francisco's Aquatic Park, a female swimmer was bitten by a sea lion.

Alice Ma, who was swimming near the woman, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the pinniped grabbed the victim's leg and tried to drag her underwater. Similar attacks occurred last month when two swimmers were bitten by sea lions in separate incidents.

John Baxter said a retired San Francisco firefighter who also was swimming helped the badly bleeding woman as she came out of the water.

Some officials have speculated that a single animal could be responsible for all of the attacks, but that hasn't been confirmed.

Responders took the woman to San Francisco General Hospital for evaluation, while the city and National Park Service staff investigate the matter further.
