Wild rallies past Blackhawks after 'embarrassing' start

Blackhawks' Seabrook a healthy scratch Tuesday

Blackhawks' Brent Seabrook a healthy scratch for Tuesday

Granlund and Spurgeon scored in the third period as Minnesota overcame a 2-0 deficit before ultimately losing in overtime.

Ryan Suter gave Minnesota the lead on a 4-on-4 early in the third period, Devan Dubnyk made 34 saves and the Wild held off the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Wednesday night to end a two-game slide.

The Wild answered one period later when Brodin's slap shot deflected off a defender's stick past Forsberg with 10:02 to go in the second. He also should have had Sharp's effort at 5:14 of the period that got the onslaught underway for the Hawks and led to Anderson's exit.

"We've talked about it, you guys have talked about it and we have to find a way in our room to have better second periods", said Phaneuf. "We weren't skating, no energy, turning a lot of pucks over, and they were playing in our end".

"To their credit, I thought they really buckled down and played really hard", Boudreau said.

While the Senators were outshot 17-7 by the Hawks in the first period and Anderson had to be solid, it looked like he may have been screened on the shot by Panik that opened the scoring at 18:51 of the first.

For the Wild to be down just one goal after one period to the Blackhawks was a surprise - or as Boudreau put it, "amazing".

Nick Schmaltz and Jonathan Toews each scored a pair of goals and Patrick Kane had a career-high five-point night with a goal and four assists as the Chicago Blackhawks routed the Senators 8-2.

But that's all the Blackhawks could muster. Kane had five points for the first time in his career. "You just never want to play those types of games".

Richard Panik, Patrick Sharp and Jan Rutta also scored for Chicago (21-15-6), while Anton Forsberg made 25 saves.

Minnesota's Nino Niederreiter missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks broke in the second half of their season by topping the Senators, 8-2.

The Ottawa Senators couldn't get a save Tuesday night and, ultimately, they couldn't save themselves either. Kane has been named to the All-Star team every season in which a game was played since his sophomore season of 2008-09. The Wild, who are in their final game before a bye week, could have a little momentum after rallying Tuesday to grab a valuable point in the standings during an eventual 3-2 OT loss against the Calgary Flames.

Getting the speedy 22-year-old Duclair is another step for Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman as he tries to shake up and add quickness to a perennial contender that's looked sluggish at times this season while fighting to maintain a playoff position.

Ryan has five goals and 12 assists in 32 games this season. He is expected to be out until the Wild returns from their bye week on January 20.
