Bears rent Chiefs offensive coordinator as new coach

As much as the Bears sought a fresh voice and new approach for the offense and quarterback Mitch Trubisky, they were pretty happy with how the defense has come along.

Helfrich, who was sacked after Oregon's 4-8 finish in 2016, will be hired as the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, according to an ESPN report. There was speculation Fangio could join forces with Pat Shurmur if he lands a head-coaching job this offseason-Shurmur is viewed as the favorite to replace Bruce Arians in Arizona-but instead it looks like he'll be back for a fourth season in Chicago. Nagy and Pace were measured in their remarks at Tuesday's introductory news conference, but by the end of that night, signs were pointing toward a return.

Fangio has been sought as a defensive coordinator elsewhere, including by the Green Bay Packers.

Giggs interviewed to be new Wales manager
Robinson was something of a mentor to both of Wales's two major players when they emerged onto the worldwide scene. Wales have been without a manager since Chris Coleman stepped down in November to take over at Sunderland.

Fangio returned from the West Coast early Wednesday and was in discussions with the team that day.

Helfrich was also reportedly offered the offensive coordinator position at UCLA by Chip Kelly-an especially enticing proposition for southern OR football fans given Chase Cota's commitment.

Helfrich, hired Thursday as the Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator in what will be his first stint coaching in the National Football League, joined OR as its coordinator in 2009 and was promoted to head coach in 2013. By no means did that close off all options for Fangio. Helfrich went 37-16 as head coach of the Ducks before the school fired him at the end of the 2016 season. In 2017, the Bears finished ninth in points and 10th in yards. With Nagy calling the plays on offense, Fangio's defensive knowledge becomes that much more important.

With Fangio coming back, it's likely the Bears will consider retaining multiple position coaches on that side of the ball, with Nagy having the final say. Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace announced the hiring of Matt Nagy as the NFL football team's 16th head coach, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018.
