Boeing Reveals Electric, Unmanned Cargo Plane

Unmanned cargo lifter deepens Boeing's push on autonomy

Boeing has unveiled a new unmanned electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) cargo air vehicle (CAV) prototype that will be used to test and evolve Boeing's autonomy technology for future aerospace vehicles.

Led by Boeing's innovative HorizonX arm, the technology greatly compliments the eVTOL passenger vehicle prototype aircraft that is now in development at the Boeing-owned Aurora Flight Sciences.

"We have an opportunity to really change air travel and transport, and we'll look back on this day as a major step in that journey", Hyslop said in a statement.

Looking just like a HobbyKing Beer Lift challenge entry, Boeing is touting their Unmanned Cargo Air Vehicle.

The company conducted initial test flights of the CAV at its autonomous systems lab in Missouri.

Indians, Cody Allen avoid arbitration
Earlier this week, Cleveland also avoided arbitration with closer Cody Allen , agreeing to a one-year, $10.575 million contract. Salazar , who is coming off an inconsistent and injury-slowed 2017, will make $5 million next season.

The aircraft, which is 4.57m long, 5.49m wide and 1.22m tall, is powered by an electric propulsion system with custom Boeing batteries and features eight counter rotating blades to allow for vertical flight. Boeing HorizonX, with its partners in Boeing Research & Technology, led the development of the CAV prototype, which complements the eVTOL passenger air vehicle prototype aircraft in development by Aurora Flight Sciences, a company acquired by Boeing late a year ago.

In less than three months, Boeing engineers designed and built the CAV prototype, which stands four feet off the ground, measures 15 by 18 feet and weighs more than 700 pounds. "Boeing has an unmatched track record, regulatory know-how and systematic approach to deliver solutions that will shape the future of autonomous flight", says Steve Nordlund, Boeing HorizonX vice-president.

Established in 1916, the Chicago-based Boeing is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems.
