British rowers set Atlantic crossing record

Relatives were forced to rearrange their travel in order to be there in time to greet Dicky Taylor, George Biggar, Peter Robinson and Stuart Watts when they arrived in Antigua at the end of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

The Four Oarsmen arrived at Antigua on Saturday after spending 29 days and 15 hours at sea for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, crossing from La Gomera in the Canary Islands.

In the early hours of this morning, however, the "four oarsmen" completed the 3,000-mile course in record time to win an endurance race seen as the toughest on Earth. The previous race record of 35 days was set a year ago by the Anglo-American quartet Latitude 35.

The Oarsmen have been tackling the feat in a 25-foot boat, relying exclusively on their own manpower, routing and interpretation of the weather conditions, battling against ungodly sleep patterns, physical exhaustion and unpredictable seas.They planned to adopt a pattern of rowing for two hours and sleeping for two hours throughout the challenge. They have had to process sea water from the ocean through a solar-powered unit, while dried ration packs and food plucked from the ocean have been on the menu.

The "Four Oarsmen" completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise awareness of mental health - and about £250,000 for the charity Mind - after Biggar's mother, Anne Fisher, killed herself in 2011.

Andy Hindhaugh, commercial director at McCreath, Simpson and Prentice, which sponsored The Four Oarsmen, said: "The whole team at McCreath, Simpson and Prentice wants to congratulate the Four Oarsmen on their absolutely unbelievable achievement".
