An explosion risk shut down the northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 65 in southern in following an early-morning crash involving multiple semis and hazardous spill.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on I-65 southbound near mile marker 43.

According to police, one of the trucks was carrying four different types of hazardous materials that spilled and mixed.

I-65 northbound is now back open in Jackson County north of the 41 mile marker.

Eastbound lanes remained closed almost the entire day, only reopening sometime after 8 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

One person, a passenger in one of the semis, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is cleaning up the chemicals, WLFI-TV reported. Police earlier were asking drivers to avoid the area and take alternate routes. A private environmental cleanup company was also on hand to help offload the contents of the leaking trailer. Work is expected to last through the late afternoon hours.
