Talks off between Danica Patrick Ganassi for Daytona Indy double

It was announced a year ago that Danica Patrick had lost her full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series ride with Stewart-Haas Racing after the team elected to replace her with Aric Almirola. After this, she would retire from racing. She was fairly successful in some of the races she's run at that place.

The only other team that offers both full-time Cup Series and IndyCar teams is Team Penske and it doesn't seem like a possible destination for Patrick. Almost two months later, she still doesn't have anything lined up for either race, and things are not looking good for her, either. Ganassi said at the time, "I have talked to her and her representatives". There was speculation that she could race in both races for the team since the team are one of two teams with a team in both the Cup Series and IndyCar. The other team of that nature, Team Penske, are at capacity for the Indianapolis 500 with their three full-time drivers and three-time race victor Helio Castroneves, so they were pretty much ruled out from the start.

Chip Ganassi Racing president Steve Lauletta doesn't see Danica Patrick joining CGR for the Daytona 500 or the Indianapolis 500. Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing are already ruled out for her in the Daytona 500 because they each field four cars full-time. With just under forty days remaining until the event, and even less until qualifying and the duel races, time is running out.

Ganassi also said then that "I'm a long way from saying I can do it".

"We're not talking any longer, " Lauletta said. "I think it would have made sense, and we did have conversations if she wanted to run in both races, the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500, and ultimately we couldn't come to a solution that worked for both of us".

"We're going to stay focused on the task at hand. which is getting the [Nos.] 1 and the 42 in Cup and the [No.] 42 in Xfinity into Victory Lane as much as we can with the hopes of winning a couple of championships", Lauletta said.

"And the same thing on our IndyCar program". We've got two cars that were tested yesterday in Sebring and we're going to stay focused on that rather than put another temporary effort together and not doing it up to the standards that we would want to.

Things are not looking good for Danica Patrick in terms of landing rides for the 2018 Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500.

Ganassi made a lot of sense for Patrick because Patrick could drive both races for the same team. The situation is definitely unfolding, but there are still plenty of unknowns.
