The Walking Dead has always shown a commitment to building a diverse ensemble cast in front of the camera. But with big changes like these in the works it's likely that AMC wanted to get all these changes finalized before announcing the show's 9 season.
Scott Gimple, the executive producer and showrunner since season 4 of the show, will not be around for The Walking Dead Season 9.
On Saturday, AMC officially renewed "The Walking Dead" for season 9 set to debut in the latter part of 2018 but the bigger news is the shake up at the top with a new show runner being named for the series.

AMC today made a number of announcements related to "The Walking Dead", the highest-rated cable series in history and the #1 show on television for the last six seasons and counting.
"This is an enormously important day for the entire "The Walking Dead" television universe". Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott's broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our "TWD" universe. "I know I speak for Angela, Scott, and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play 'Dead'".
At any rate, Gimple is moving up to a role-created-just-for-him, chief content officer, looking over all Walking Dead TV enterprises, incuding Fear the Walking Dead, as well as any future brand extensions.

Not only that, but Deadline recently told us that "How It's Gotta Be" posted the worst numbers for a mid-season finale of The Walking Dead since 2011, and that's despite the episode drawing in a grand total of 7.9 million viewers. "I'm excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can't wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall".
Produced by AMC Studios, "The Walking Dead" remains the #1 show on television among adults 18-49.
