Derek Holland signs minor league deal with Giants

Though highly valued arms like Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta remain available on the free agent market, Evans and the Giants made a smaller move Friday, signing free agent left-hander Derek Holland to a minor league contract. After going 4-4 with a 2.37 ERA in his first 10 starts of the season, Holland ran into trouble in the month of June.

The 31-year-old Holland suffered through a poor campaign with the Chicago White Sox last season, compiling a 7-14 record and 6.20 ERA in 29 appearances (26 starts). Opponents hit.335 against him and he averaged 4 2/3 innings per outing.

Holland could compete for a job out of spring training with a rotation that has three set starters in Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija. Competition for the final two spots now involves a number of prospects (Chris Stratton, Ty Blach, Tyler Beede, Andrew Suarez) with limited Major League Baseball experience.
