George Soros defends £400000 donation to pro-EU campaign Best for Britain

George Soros will give up to £100,000 more to an anti-Brexit campaign group in a show of defiance after being criticised for his involvement in United Kingdom politics.

The tycoon has now hit back at what he described as "toxic personal criticism" against him, and has denied accusations that he was "undermining democracy".

Mr Soros's donation to Best for Britain was first reported last week, in a story written by a team including the Prime Minister's former chief of staff Nick Timothy.

Writing in the Mail on Sunday, he told how the organisation had his "wholehearted support", and insisted he had never made a secret of his opposition to Brexit. That is what has happened in Britain.

The Hungarian-born 87-year-old, one of the world's richest men, infamously made a billion dollars betting against the pound on so-called "Black Wednesday", when the UK's economy collapsed in 1992.

He said "allowing a referendum on membership was a fatal error", and said Brexit is a "lose-lose proposition both for Britain and for Europe".

'To make matters worse, the divorce process will preoccupy both Britain and Europe for years ahead, when they should be uniting to resist external enemies like Putin's Russian Federation and resolve the internal contradictions that made some people regard the European Union as their enemy'.

Mr Soros said Brexit had divided the country, turning young against old and that young people had become disillusioned with democracy after older votes "overruled" them in the referendum.

Declaring himself a "proud supporter" of Best for Britain, he warned that the effect of the uncertainty created by Brexit would become "painfully obvious" in the next six months as negotiations entered the "most contentious phase".

Mr Timothy used his column in the newspaper to claim that Best for Britain wanted to bring down Mrs May's government.

'Malloch-Brown and his backers believe that, if Parliament rejects the Brexit deal, the Government will fall, and Brexit can then be stopped'.
