Following the introduction of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz G-Class at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the German auto maker's AMG sub-brand has taken the wraps off the high performance G63. Mercedes-Maybachs are aimed at clients who look at a Mercedes S-Class - a genuine candidate for Best Car In The World status - and shudder at the thought of being whooshed around in something so common.
Although it has been confirmed what will be under the bonnet of the new AMG-GT when it goes into production in September, the general consensus is that it will launch with the 604 bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V-8 now found in the E63 S 4Matic.
"The new AMG G63 brings driving performance to the segment of unadulterated off-road vehicles in unexpected form", said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG.

Naturally this is delivered to all four wheels via a nine-speed Speedshift automatic transmission, although its maker has opted to replace the previous G63's 50:50 torque spread with a 40:60 split in favour of the rear axle. And even though the 2019 G-Wagen's retro turn signals seem identical to the old models, they actually are created to collapse into the ute's fenders in the event of a collision with a pedestrian to prevent injuries. The latest G63 launch version, known as Edition 1, should therefore come in around the £150,000 mark because of its exclusivity and the fact it features bespoke colours, AMG sports seats, dark tinted headlamps and tail lamps, forged 22-inch alloys and a flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel. If you tell your driver to step on it, you'll hit 60 miles per hour time in 4.6 seconds, according to Mercedes. Vmax can be stretched to 240km/h with the AMG driver's package, if doing 220km/h in a 4x4 fails to excite you. It offers five on-road modes, including Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.
The G-Class' boxy silhouette remains largely unchanged, although AMG-specific changes include beefier bumpers with larger air inlets, some seriously cool side-exit exhaust pipes, a unique front grille and with a host of gloss-black and matt-silver trim inserts.

Mercedes is keeping quiet on which engines will be offered with the new C-Class, but we're expecting a major overhaul of the current car's line-up.
It's possible that hybrid G-Class models could arrive further down the line, but a fully electric version is very unlikely. That should improve, however, with a new chassis that's 375 pounds lighter and 55 percent stiffer, co-developed for the first time with the company's high-performance AMG division.
