The first batch of vaccine for a deadly rabbit virus - which forced the euthanization of 66 rabbits at a shelter in Richmond - has arrived in B.C.

In Richmond, according to media reports, the vaccine arrived too late to save the animals and the vaccine will be donated to low income people with rabbits as pets. A second batch of the vaccine is expected in early May, following heightened demand.
The Ministry of Agriculture ordered the vaccine from a manufacturer in France in March, following the first-ever B.C. diagnosis of the disease on Vancouver Island. The leading vaccine is produced by a manufacturer in France and must be imported by the province with emergency permits granted by the federal government.

To date, the province has conducted tests on 20 feral and seven domestic rabbits. In nine months, an estimated 14 million domestic rabbits died in the initial outbreak.
