In the hours leading up to the inauguration, Israeli troops engaged in clashes with Palestinians taking part in mass protests on the Gaza border, killing at least 52 unarmed demonstrators, including Children and teenagers, with live fire. Several thousand more Palestinian protesters are located more than a quarter of a mile from the border fence in a tent area, the IDF said.

As the deadliest day of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians since the 2014 Gaza War unfolded on Monday, White House senior adviser Jared Kushner addressed a crowd at the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem and said he believes "peace is within reach".

Kushner, who has led the Trump administration's efforts to facilitate peace between Israelis and Palestinians, went on to promote plans for brokering talks between the two factions. Although past presidents contemplated moving the American embassy out of Tel Aviv, Trump has been the first to act on it, declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel in December.

A day earlier, at a special "Thank you America" event at Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a crowd - including 250 visiting USA senators, congressmen, community and religious leaders - that Monday "will be a historic day for our people and for our state". At least 772 other protesters were wounded, including 86 who were in a serious or critical condition.

The Israeli military identified three of those martyred as armed militants whom it said tried to place explosives near the fence in the southern Gaza Strip.

Last week, the Israeli government said the ongoing border protests constituted a "state of war" in which global humanitarian law did not apply. Groups of young activists repeatedly approached the fence, but were quickly scattered by gunfire and tear gas.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan said at the welcoming ceremony that Trump's decision to relocate the embassy was "essential to creating a roadmap for peace in the region".
