A former boxer who grew up poor in the small town of Searchlight, Nevada, Reid rose to the one of the most powerful positions in American politics as Nevada's longest-serving senator.

According to Reid's family, doctors discovered the tumor in his pancreas during a routine screening and they are confident that he will recover well after the surgery. As of Monday afternoon, Reid was "out of surgery, in good spirits, and resting with his family", according to the family statement. "He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support", the statement said.
